Livescribe 2GB Echo Smartpen Shows Anoto Digital Pen Technology

Livescribe Voice Recorders boost the potential of Anoto digital pen technology.

We see technology at work everywhere. There is no doubt digital smartpens have the potential to transform our lives in many ways, touching the lives of many people, business professionals, educators, students and parents.  The underlying digital pen technology that makes digital smartpens stand out is the Anoto digital pen technology.

Anoto Digital Pen Technology

In many ways, digital pens using this Anoto Digital Pen Technology technology have altered the way we approach note taking as we can capture notes and drawings, synchronize them, convert them to digital form, and upload them to a computer for organization and management, searching, and sharing.

Digital smartpens using the Anoto Digital Pen Technology can change your view of note taking in classes, meetings, and conferences. The technology requires special interactive dot paper using a Dot Positioning System (DPS).

These pens digitally record whatever you write or draw for replay by touching the pen to the dot paper at the desired point.

The captured digital information can be searched and replayed and updated as desired. You can upload the digital recording to the computer for archiving, updating, searching, retrieval, editing, and review. You can also create other formats of the recording such as CD or PDF, for export just like any computer file.

Livescribe Digital Smartpens in Action

What is unique though about Livescribe Smartpens that use the Anoto Digital Pen Technology?  It is their ability to capture an audio recording, a voice recording of every note a teacher or lecturer says.

Whenever we are attending lectures, we are torn between two requirements – either we pay attention to the lecture or we take notes.

In the end most of us end up doing neither or neither very well; our notes are often not complete or very legible.  In focusing on note-taking we are often not listening closely to the teacher or lecturer.

This can be frustrating especially when we try and piece the lecture together. We may have a hard time using the notes without converting them.  Think of the problems this causes when students study for exams!

Livescribe Smartpens Extend the Anoto Digital Pen Capabilities

The Livescribe smartpens’ capability to record handwriting and drawings, integrated the recordings of notes and drawings is well known. So is the easy-to-use digital transcription functionality, which allows you to record everything you write and draw, edit the recordings, and convert the handwriting to digital text.

In addition to these features described, all the Livescribe Pulse and Echo smartpens are also voice recorders that can capture every word of a speech, lecture, conversation or tutoring session.  The audio recordings are very clearly indexed to synchronize with your written notes, a groundbreaking feature allowing easy access to playback from any point in the recording.  It also makes possible updating the integrated recordings, maintaining the links between audio and digital.

The Pulse and Echo share these amazing feature sets; to compare the differences in storage and audio outputs, check out my handy side-by-side comparison of the models here. This article includes a video of an entry level Livescribe smartpen, the awardwinning Livescribe 2GB Pulse Smartpen  by web designer and copywriter Scott Foster.  Scott owns a Pulse Smartpen as I do.  This video shows how much Scott believes in the pens and their value.  He presents a clear demonstration of the most basic functionaliy of the pens, its recording and digital conversion capability, based on Anoto Digital Pen Technology.

The Livescribe digital smartpens have extended the Anoto Digital Pen Technology by adding the capability to capture a complete voice  recording at the same time you capture your handwritten notes and drawings.

If your mind wanders or you are thinking about the night’s activities, you can just record the audio.  If the teacher or a classmate makes an observation after class, you can add to the audio recording or the handwritten notes.

Think of the advantage to students participating in team projects; each student can record who agreed to assume each responsibility.  Best of all, the Livecribe integrated notes or pencasts can be shared on the Livescribe Community Online or by email!

With Livescribe Digital Smartpens, you can avoid many of the  minor tragedies in life we described.

A Livescribe digital smartpen records whatever you write and draw. At the same time, the pen records sounds being made while you are writing or drawing.  The Livescribe digital smartpens extend Anoto Digital Pen Tecnology by adding the capability to capture audio while recording notes and drawings.

This ability to integrate and synchronize  your notes with audio is a major contribution to digital pen technology.

A complete audio recording can be played back by touching the pen to the interactive dot paper at a desired point (special word, or phrase).  This audio clip, called a pencast, is stored on your pen or uploaded to your computer for searching and replaying.

With a simple click you can search the recording, insert an image, update your notes, or insert additional audio into your notes.  If you like, you can then return to listening to the lecture or talk or whatever.

Advanced Audio Controls

Later tap on a special word or phrase (keyword) to begin replay of a part of the recording. Skip back to a previous part of the recording, or slow down the speed if desired. In this way you can reconstruct the lecture in a a manner that is easy, informative and hassle free. Imagine how easily students will be able to review their notes using a pen like this.

How does a digital smartpen work?

What are the essential differences between a digital smartpen and an ordinary pen? The differences lies inside the digital pen shell. The basic ingredients of a digital pen based on Anoto digital pen technology are:

  1. A sophisticated miniature infrared camera which captures images of the handwritten notes and drawings captured;
  2. an image processing unit which takes the images and converts them into a digital format along with a communication interface
  3. microphone for recording clear sound
  4. memory storage 200 to 800 hours recorded audio
  5. USB connection for recharging and transfer of notes to computer.

The digital pen also hosts a small ink cartridge which is used for writing on the special dot paper.  This special paper is divided into small rectangular parts like you see in a graph sheet.

The images taken with the digital camera are captured with the patterned dot positioning paper in the background. A special algorithm converts these images into digital format which is then stored into the memory.

The Future

There can be doubt that modern digital technology has transformed our lives and the business and education environments.  The day is not far off when business confererences and meetings, and college and training lectures will be purely virtual.

At the same time we will not stop recording lectures, business conferences and meetings or taking notes. The Livescribe Echo 2GB Smartpen shows the Anoto digital pen technology giving smartpens an edge in preparing for that day. Digital smartpens like the Echo 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB Smartpens are likely to be the gamechangers when the transformation occurs.
